The opportunities for mountain biking in Ruapehu abound with numerous trails easily accessible from any of the towns & villages of the region.
Whether you are a first timer or downhill demon, there are trails to suit in and around the Tongariro National Park and Whanganui National Park. Ruapehu is proudly home to two of the New Zealand Cycleways Great Rides with the Timber Trail and the Mountains to Sea – Nga Ara Tuhono.
Set in amongst the diverse and spectacular central North Island terrain, there are also a number of other serviced cycleways including: the 42 Traverse, Fishers Track, Ohakune Old Coach Road and more.
As the halfway point between New Zealand’s two largest cities, you can drive inland from almost anywhere in the North island and you’ll end up in Ruapehu. At the southern end of Lake Taupō and in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Ruapehu is halfway between Auckland and Wellington just a 4 hour drive from either city.
