The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is regarded as the best one-day hike in New Zealand and is considered to be in the top 10 one day hikes in the world! It can be hiked in either winter or summer. The freedom hiking season runs from October to May. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 6-7 hour hike with the opportunity of two side trips. Mt Ngauruhoe or Mt Tongariro. Both side trips you need to add another 3 hours to the duration.
During winter months, June to October, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing requires a guide. The snow level covers the track and markers. We highly recommend you checking in with us to check weather conditions no matter what the season is as the weather can change quickly and dramatically. Metservice
Moderate fitness is required. The track is well marked with toilet stops along the way. There is no water available on the track or any rubbish bins. It’s pack in pack out style of day. It’s important to organise transport prior to arrival as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one way track.
