Turoa Ski Area
Turoa Ski Field is just a 55-minute drive from Plateau Lodge, located on Mt Ruapehu. Though there are no buses running from National Park Village to Turoa Ski Field, there are shuttles that leave from the i-SITE Visitor Centre in the centre of Ohakune, just a 30-min drive.
The Ruapehu Alpine Meadow facility is separate from the main ski area.
Mt Ruapehu is a haven for intermediate and advanced skiers/boarders and there are plenty of groomed trails and three huge off-piste areas. For advanced skiers and riders, the runs to the left and right of the mountain can be fantastic with few people around. Turoa does lack some of the difficulty of the expert runs of Whakapapa; however, it does offer more of a big-mountain experience with a sense of size being prevalent.
